The Dreaming of Oak & Ash

***NOTE: due to incredibly high demand this event is SOLD OUT. We will try to create a few extra places so please follow the link on the website to join the reserve list***

This summer, House of Legends will present a new mythic immersion retreat in the Scottish Highlands. It’s called The Dreaming of Oak & Ash.

The event is a collaboration between myself and three hugely talented artists: Aron Hegarty of Candlelit Tales, Kirsten Milliken and Sam Gillespie of The Brothers Gillespie. Over three days and nights, within a woodland at the edge of the Perthshire highlands, we’ll venture deep into Celtic and Nordic myth. We’ll explore the tangled union of traditions which we’ve inherited, and search for glimpses of our lost pagan past within the threads of myth and legend.

Sam will bring traditional song and music to the mix, playing in time to the stories, taking us in deeper.

There will be deep nature connection, ceremony, ceilidh sessions, storytelling workshops, morning yoga led by Aron beneath the leaves.

There will be woodsmoke, cuckoos, hawthorns, poetry, strange dreams and unexpected moments of magic.

At the centre of it all, there will be stories that have lived, survived and breathed their magic for thousands of years. Stories of gods, ancestors and legendary beings that are alive and waiting to meet you.

We’re not holding back with this one. We want you to have a deep, powerful, transformative experience. And we want to start something which will continue and build for many years to come.

See the Summer Retreat page for further details. Want to be first to know about the next one? Join my mailing list.

I Would Drink of Your Heart's Blood, Cymera Festival, Scotland

On a midsummer night on the Isle of Lewis, Griogair leaves the ceilidh house and wanders into the cave-strewn glens. Hearing a voice echoing among the rocks, he encounters a fairy woman who lifts the veil from the hidden world his heart longs for.

Yet there is only so much magic a person can take. The otherworld is not Griogair’s home, and a fairy woman scorned is a tempest that knows no bounds.

I Would Drink of Your Heart’s Blood weaves together Scottish folklore, poetry and Greek myth into a unique oral storytelling performance. Written and performed by oral storyteller and bestselling author Daniel Allison, the show ask why we long for the otherworld and what happens when we meet it.

Crack a Story, Plant a Seed: The Crow's Wife

At this online event I’ll be telling the story of The Crow’s Wife - also known as The Tale of The Hoodie - at The Salisbury Centre’s online event, Crack A Story: Plant a Seed.

These storytelling sessions invite storytellers to share a story that is dear to them and has a spiritual theme. It will then be followed by a "crack" - Scottish word for conversation - exploring the story, its deeper meanings and how it speaks to us and our world today.

The Crow’s Wife features in my new book, Scottish Myths & Legends. It is a hauntingly beautiful story with many layers of reflections to offer us.

The event will be jointly hosted by myself and Olga Bloemen.

To join, click the following Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/652120818

Please arrive from 6pm to settle in - we'll start promptly at 6:15pm.

The Crack a Story sessions are part of the Salisbury Centre's community programme and are offered on donation (suggested donation £5). All contributions will be split between the storyteller and the Salisbury Centre. https://www.salisburycentre.org/donate/

Accompanied children welcome, although the stories are more tailored to adults and those over 12 years old.

If you have any questions, feel free to email Susannah @salisburycentre.org or Olga @salisburycentre.org.

Treasures of the Earth, Edinburgh

Join us for a special online international edition of the Guid Crack Club!

The Guid Crack Club is Edinburgh’s longest running storytelling club, usually held in the Waverley Bar on the last Friday of each month. Though we can’t gather together in person, we can still have an international ceilidh, open to all!

If you’d like to join us, please click on the given link from 7pm. The event is limited to 100 people so please arrive early to ensure a spot. The stories will begin at 7.30pm and end at 10pm.

The event will be hosted by Daniel Allison and will take the form of a ceilidh session, with a few contributions from the host and the rest from attendees.

If you would like to share a story, song or poem, please send Daniel a message once you have arrived, with the name of your offering, whether it is a story, song, poem or something else, and the approximate length. Please keep your offering under 10mins so there is room for everyone who would like to contribute.

Our theme is Treasures of the Earth. What hidden jewels can we find amid the present turmoil? Bring a diamond of a story, song or poem which will dispel the darkness and bring us joy and wonder.

The event will take the form of a Zoom meeting. If you haven’t used Zoom before, it might be worth downloading the application in advance, watching a demo video or two and giving it a trial run, in order to avoid having technical issues on the night. The application is free to download and run.

We ask for attendees to make a £5 donation towards the Scottish Storytelling Centre’s work. A PayPal address will be provided, which you can use to contribute on the night or in advance.
